Description
The M31 bread bag of the German Army was used during World War II and had many iterations. As the name suggests, these bags were used to carry rations mainly comprised of bread. But soldiers didn't stop there. Many also used them to carry items such as field goggles, cigarettes or even a cleaning kit. The modern civilian could store lunch, textbooks and everyday carry gear in this vintage shoulder bag.
There bread bags were issued by the East German National People's Army (NVA) during the 1950s and 60s, and are pretty much identical in design to their World War II counterparts besides a simplification in construction.
These bags have two internal compartments secured by leather straps and metal buttons. The two loops and hook on the top are used for belt attachment. Below that are D-rings which were originally used to hold a field bottle and mess tin. The leather tabs on the front would then be used to secure the field bottle and mess tin straps to stop them from bouncing around. Our supplier has sewn basic webbing on to act as a shoulder strap, however these could be unpicked have something more sturdy attached via the D-rings.
This is a great vintage item for the modern life. Use it to carry a tablet and notebook or pack your lunch for work. Even attach a couple to your bicycle as pannier bags.
